Aims

Call Christian movements and associations of students and other members of the academic community to faith in God - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - according to the Scriptures and to discipleship within the life and mission of the Church; help them grow in the Christian life through prayer, study of the Bible, and participation in the worship and witness of the Church; help them to witness Jesus Christ in the academic community; bring them into fellowship with one another in mutual service and support efforts to serve all students in their needs; help them to strive for peace and justice in and among nations; help them to work for the manifestation of the unity of the Church; help them to be servants and messengers of God's kingdom in all the world; provide a place for leadership development and the empowerment of women, a critique of higher education in the context of globalization and the development of alternatives and for exploration of a theology and spirituality rooted in the hopes and struggles of students worldwide.

Activities

Operates principally through 6 regional centres. Organizes: conferences; meetings; visits to national movements by staff or special visitors; exchange of leadership. Promotes leadership development through courses, conferences, commissions, consultations, publications and visits; studies ecumenical questions, evangelism and missions, Bible study, political questions, university structure and curriculum; provides mutual help and general student relief. Was instrumental in setting up 'European Student Relief' in 1920, which subsequently developed into World University Service (WUS); and cooperated with World Student Relief (WRS)^* until its dissolution in 1950.

Contribution to UNESCO's programmes WSCF, whose geographical extension is somewhat limited but reasonably balanced with numerous activities in every continent, is an active NGO sharing the same objectives and activities as a certain number of NGOs with relations with UNESCO: promotion and defence of students’ interests, more democratic access to higher education, connecting education with the work place. It has not responded to the Director-General’s consultations on the C/4 and C/5 documents during the sexennial period under review and its contribution to the Sexennial Report was submitted late. It does not fully meet the requirements for admission to formal relations, and should be encouraged to draw closer to the other similar organizations working in the same fields.
