Aims
Develop and test methods of comprehensive community renewal and motivate cross-sectoral cooperative action in support of local development with an emphasis on the human factor; catalyze grassroots participation in improving the quality of life by serving the world-wide need for self development in local communities and organizations.

Activities
Acts as point of interchange for members' activities in: community meeting facilitation; educational methods research and training; organizational problem solving; youth and women's forums; rural development practitioner interchange symposia; rural development project replication schemes; village leader development methods training; strategic planning seminars; village level basic skills training and conference facilitation. Each member independently establishes its own relations with NGO networks. International Exposition of Rural Development (IERD) created as an 80-nation exchange process over 3 years (1982-1985) to highlight effective development approaches. Organizes Global Conference on Human Development (every 4 years).

Contribution to UNESCO's programmes Given that its mandate and strategic policies fall in strong alignment with UNESCO’s programmes’ approach, ICAI has the potential to contribute to the achievement of UNESCO’s mandate. ICAI particularly proposed to work with UNESCO in the areas of Sustainable Forest Management and Fighting HIV/AIDS with cultural approach, which was reviewed favorably by the Culture Sector.
