Contribution to UNESCO's programmes Since its admission into former category C in 1982, the Association has had regular contacts with UNESCO, in particular with the Culture Sector. Its Annual Assembly, which was sparsely attended, was held at UNESCO Headquarters in 1994. There is a UNESCO/UNDP project on the reconstruction of Lebanon, with a significant component for Tyre, involving the Association. There is also a project for integrating Tyre in the ‘Silk Roads’ project (UNESCO contracts). The Association’s international operation, structure, financing and composition of its membership and governing bodies are such that it is not an NGO within the meaning of the Directives, but rather a network. The specific feature of co-operation between UNESCO and the Association is the importance which the latter represents for the protection of the cultural heritage of Tyre, pursuant to the resolution adopted at the twenty-first session of the General Conference. This co-operation is not of a consultative nature; it is very specific and concrete.
